The West Station Goods Yard scheme emerged from a detailed development brief that set great store by the historic setting of the site. Conservation Area constraints and opportunities, along with a well-developed parking strategy, encouraged reduced levels of parking provision. Canterbury West Station adjoins the site, and the city centre is within easy reach, so the location is clearly sustainable in terms of transport.
Gated parking courts are the main form of parking provision, with on street parking controls to maximise their use and prevent ad hoc parking. Prior to the controls being introduced and enforced, on street parking led to considerable overrun damage to street kerblines, especially by larger vehicles passing parked cars.
There were some complaints by early residents about the approach to parking, but things appear to have settled down. Those who own cars that cannot be accommodated on the site have purchased permits to park in nearby public car parks. Overall ownership is less than one per unit. Visitors can also use the public car parks, or travel by train!
Access to two of the enclosed parking courts can just about be seen.

The site is very permeable for pedestrians and cyclists, with two well-used routes crossing access ways to parking areas.

On street parking controls have allowed use of a very tight layout, and interesting urban forms.

The on street waiting restrictions were made known to all prospective purchasers, and were enforced from the outset. As a result, all available parking provision is well-used.
